CONCLUSIONS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CULTURTEC 2002
III EUROPEAN CONFERENCE "EMPLOYMENT AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY”

Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid. 24 May 2002

"As professionals in culture, education, museums, tourism, entrepreneurs, managers and researchers in cultural heritage, experts in audiovisual communication and hypermedia, as well as students of all these areas, meeting at the International Conference CULTURTEC 2002, we wish to declare as conclusions of our meeting:

The promotion of the conception of the museum as a conservative element of the memory of the cultural difference, that promotes the common cultural elements from the diversity, thanks to its communication capacity though new technologies.

The ineluctible task of extending and, at the same time, of amplifying the concept of cultural heritage, which is not limited to objects, monuments, historical spaces and museums, but includes the full spectrum of human knowledge, exceeding the old conception and integrating it into the daily life of the citizens. This concept of cultural heritage stimulates us to make it central to everything in the concept of the so-called Information Society that UNESCO is replacing by that of Information for Everyone.
The conviction of the importance of new communications technologies for consideration, circulation and teaching of cultural heritage within the so-called Information and Knowledge Society, that permits and promotes economic development and the creation of employment.

The inescapable need to introduce new communications technologies in the educational area, with the determined support of administrations, as an incomparable way to give keys to access and understanding to world cultural heritage for future generations.
Our interest to know critically new technologies and apply them creatively, promoting the understanding of cultural heritage as a way of mutual respect among citizens, emphasising its historical, ethical dimesions and its value for coexistence.
Our support for the inevitable tendency towards interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study and research, relating new technologies and the humanities, sciences, education, the arts and cultural heritage from a prospect of integration and complementarity.
The promotion of theoretical analysis in our work in the implementation of new technologies for the field of cultural heritage and the teaching thereof, convinced that new technologies oblige us to reframe obsolete concepts in the consideration of objects or cultural spaces, with respect to their historical, communicative and educational value, entering into a new comprehensive framework of cultural heritage.

The development of training for professionals for qualification in the full spectrum of digital culture and the study of a social pedagogy for the use of new productions of communications technologies. Promote a European Network of Excellence in Digital Culture, open to all those interested institutions that opt decidedly for research and sharing applications of new technologies within cultural heritage.
All these tasks and prospects could only be carried out with a determined support by administrations for the investigation and the implementation of new technologies to the field of education and cultural heritage.

Starting from these considerations, we wish to promote the Conference CULTURTEC as an international forum for debate and exchange of experiences, projects and research, on a regular bi-annual basis, to continue in the spirit of the European Commission’s Memorandum of Understanding for Multimedia Access to European Cultural Heritage, and from a viewpoint that integrates the individual in their historical past and cultural present, attending to diversity and promoting information and knowledge for everyone in a spirit of tolerance".
